There is no doubt that when it comes to home defense, a shotgun is a really good choice, the only question is, what ammo would be the ideal choice.
But seriously, the last thing anyone needs to worry about at three o’clock in the morning when some crackhead has broken into your house, is what ammo you should be using in your shotgun.
Chances are in that awful situation, you are not going to be any more than a few feet away from the intruder, no time for a verbal warning, it’s time for action and so instead of wondering which ammo to use, let’s take a good look at what’s available, so that you don’t have to worry about that okay?
Modern advancements in ammunition design have produced some exciting shotgun loads specifically engineered for effective home defense, and these high-performance loads really deliver.
However, when it comes to shotgun ammunition for home defense, there are good options, and there are better options.
So let’s take a quick look at the basic types of shotgun ammunition….they are:
- BIRDSHOT: If birdshot has any advantage in home defense, it is the minimal penetration it achieves though household walls. Wall penetration is an important consideration in home defense, especially if you have kids sleeping in the next room.
- BUCKSHOT: Of the three most common types of shotgun ammunition, buckshot offers the best balance between wounding power, penetration, and effective range.
- SLUGS: A shotgun slug contains a single metal projectile. These massive projectiles are heavy, penetrate deeply, and deliver serious internal damage.
I usually like a “visual”, so sit back and watch the video, hopefully it will help you to make the right choice.
