Back From The Scrapheap of History: Palmetto State Armory Is Resurrecting The STG-44

Even though I hate the term “Assault Rifle”, that is exactly what the title of this weapon (Sturmgewehr) means. “Sturmgewehr” means- “Storm/Assault Rifle”. Whatever modern name you care to give it, the STG-44 was the first of it’s kind and every rifle similar to it that was made afterwards, owes it’s creation to the STG-44.

The weapons’ existence wasn’t mentioned to Hitler until later in 1944 after it had been in use for a few months. Hitler believed that the bolt action Karabiner 98k battle rifle of the German Army was more than adequate for his troops. But once he actually saw the STG-44 and was told of it’s awesome rate of fire, he changed his mind regarding the weapon and gave it his blessing for use on the battlefield.

If you could find an original STG-44 you would need to have a FFL to own one. But it appears that the STG-44 is being resurrected for the civilian market by the folks at Palmetto State Armory and from what I’m seeing, they won’t be too expensive.

STG-44 reproductions have been in the works from Hill & Mac Gun Works for a while, and now Palmetto State Armory is onboard to bring it across the finish line! The STG-44 reproduction is part of PSA’s new “Battlefield” line of retro inspired guns. There area few modern touches such as a new magazine pattern, and a tweaked gas system to help make the gun more shootable, but the look and feel is faithful to the original.
