If you are a hunter, or you target shoot competitively, the you know that the .308 Winchester is one of the most popular short-action centerfire rifle cartridges in North America.  It can be used to hunt deer, elk, black bear, wild pigs and other animals.

Although the .30.06 is the most popular choice for a moose hunting, the 308 caliber is still a very good, especially if you are shooting at a distance under 250 yards. Also, there is a veritable plethora of .308 rifles out on the market right now to choose from.

With a verified sniper kill of 1,250 meters (1,367 yards) using the 7.62×51/.308 Winchester cartridge, the majority of military sniper schools will place the maximum effective range of the 7.62×51/.308 at between 850 and 1,000 yards, and at 1,000, there are much better choices today.
